Holiday Fun Give-Away

Last week I kicked off my annual WM Favorite Things Holiday Gift Guide (which is pretty spectacular, if you haven’t checked it out) and noticed a ton of traffic was going to the PsychoBaby online shop. They do have a really fantastic assortment of items on there so I understand the attraction.

I ordered this fun one in the long sleeve version. She LOVES it.

SO – because it is the season of giving, I have seen your interest, I hear your pleas, and I answer them, dear readers, by offering a super fun give-away from our friends at PsychoBaby Online!! Personally, I ordered the monster shirt for the youngest WM’ette and she loves it! The shirt comes from the American Apparel brand so as you probably know, those do tend to run small. She is a tall but very thin kid but even for her, at age 4, the size 6 works great and will last her through many seasons. In other words, I’d order them bigger than you normally do for the kiddos if you are the lucky winner (or even if you’re not but you’re buying some awesome holiday gifts).

Anyhow – let’s wrap this holiday give away up soon so the lucky winner can place the order for one fun thing on the site, equivalent to about $30. Go onto the WM Facebook page and enter to win by commenting under the post. I’ll announce the winner on Monday morning. And be sure to like my page and even better, share it with your friends!

Also, if you aren’t on my Facebook page, you might not know that I am asking readers to send me images of their kids or even retro images of themselves on Santa’s lap – CRYING. Kids crying on Santa’s lap pictures crack me up – and by the response I’m already getting, I know I’m not alone in this, so I want to post a WM reader photo gallery of the images you send me. Please send me those in as soon as you can so I can get this post live next week! Email me at wiredmomma@me.com

Good luck with this super fun give-away…maybe the odds be ever in your favor…..and have a great weekend. And be sure to check out all the fabulous offerings on the Psycho Baby shop if you haven’t done so already, they are frivolous, spirited and sassy – like most kids I know.

WM Favorite Things & Charities: Holiday Gift Guide 2012

It’s that time of year already, if you can believe it, to stock up on gifts, toss back some champagne at holiday parties, and figure out how to avoid parking lot rage at the malls and grocery stores. I have a particular problem with that one.

So today, I offer you a gift (beyond the year-long gift of WM, of course…heh heh)….and not just any gift but the official second annual Wired Momma Holiday Gift Guide. I thank each of you who sent me your favorite things as well to help make this a true WM community collaborative guide. I tried to put together a creative list with some options that span beyond the obvious. I tried to include locally owned female businesses and charities that are important not just to me but also to other mothers and children in our area, and some of my own personal favorite things. See what you think, consider the gift of charity this season, and of course, feel free to add your own suggestions in the comments section. I think we all look for great gift options throughout the year, not just during the holiday season. So, in no particular order, let’s get started.

For the Accessory Lover:
Two moms in Frederick, MD are the brains behind Hip Junky. If you’re not familiar with their line but you – or someone on your list – is a true belt lover, then be sure to check out. Each belt buckle is a work of art and unique. This is an accessory that adds some serious pizzazz and character to your outfit. What I particularly like is that they’ve set up a gallery of other Hip Junky lovers on their web site and feature pictures of their customers wearing the belts – love it.

For the New Moms:
My youngest is turning four this week (sniff sniff), so it’s been a while since I had a teething baby chomping on my jewelry but the memory has not faded. So when a good friend who is pregnant tipped me off about Chew Beads, I was immediately pissed I didn’t have any of these necklaces back in the day. As any great invention, this one was created by a stylish mom who wanted to keep wearing necklaces but didn’t want them to break or to worry about what chemicals her baby might be chewing on when munching on her necklace. These necklaces can be washed, are dishwasher safe, chemical and BPA free and come in a variety of fabulous colors — all reasonably priced. Love them!

For the Personalized Paper & Gift Lover:

Avid WM readers know that I am a true paper lover and am always on the hunt for new paper products. I was delighted to come across this site Sweet Mady, started by a local DC area mom. I confess, I am taken with many things on her site but am particularly drawn to the Adorable ME line of products – what kid doesn’t love images of basically themselves on everything…shirts…placemats, lunchboxes? I love it! Right now I’m leaning towards the lunch boxes – not necessarily for their lunch but for storing some of their impossibly small toys (Squeakie’s anyone?) that they inevitably lose but always want.

For the new Big Brother or Big Sister:

Frecklebox is one of my favorite sites for finding personalized gifts for my kids or for their friends as birthday gifts. They offer a variety of products at reasonable prices and deliver them to you pretty quickly. Among the many things I love on their site, I particularly fell in love with the customized books for soon-to-be big brothers or sisters. I think every kid loves a personalized book but becoming a big sibling is a really big deal – and what a great way to introduce them to this special occasion – a book about them! I warn you, it could be an hour before you get off that site if you’re not already familiar with it. We are big fans of the personalized puzzles, personalized book marks and coloring books chez Wired Momma.

For the edgy baby or toddler who won’t wear just anything:

Enter the Psychobaby Custom Shop, fortunately a good friend introduced me to this site recently and I absolutely love their clothes – especially for the child who veers off the beaten path a bit, like my youngest does. The site was lauched by veteran retailers (and experienced urban mamas) Marlo Hoffman and Lisa Starbuck. Psychobaby is where you head for individualized t-shirts, hoodies and more for your little monster, princess or rocker (seriously, you won’t find this stuff any place else).

And, new this holiday season, The Psychobaby Custom Shop is proud to present the “Instant Awesome” Collection — a perfect, customized gift set for every baby and kid on your list all bundled together for one perfect holiday gift package. Whether you have Big City Punkers, Cupcake Cuties, or 50-Yard Football Fashion MVPs on your holiday shopping list, the Psychobaby Custom Shop has an irreverent and fun gift option that you can personalize by adding names or selecting colors and graphics to create a truly one-of-a-kind present.

In addition, they have a Custom Shop with options including customized pillow cases (nighty-night petite princess! $22),the item I chose for my sassy youngest, which is a monster name tees or onesies ($26-28), designs that celebrate your hometown or state ($26-28) and “Nameasaurus Rex” onesies and tees for the little dino-lover on your list ($26-28).

Or how about this: buying for multiple kids in the same family? Combine different items from within a category to create a cool themed gift. Think customized superhero tees for the whole gang ($26). This would be a big hit chez moi.

A gift card from Maggie Winters would brighten anyone’s stocking!

For the Grandparents:

This particular gift is actually for anyone because don’t we all love pictures of our kids? But I thought I’d highlight the grandparents because sometimes they can be especially difficult to shop for and well, you know they always love pictures with their beloved grandkids. Some of you might remember the WM family had an amazing photo shoot with local photographer Maggie Winters a few months ago…well..she is offering some great packages this month that I’d encourage you to check out. One idea that really appealed to me was this – gather together with siblings to give Grandma and Grandpa a session with their kids & grandkids. We so often take family pictures but how often do we have professional pictures taken with the grandparents and grandkids? Maggie also offers friends & family sessions which are like two sessions back to back that overlap a bit so we get some photos of each little family and photos of the two families together. Photo turnaround is 2-3 days, so even sessions in December will have galleries ready by the holidays. Maggie also offers gift certificates which makes an amazing gift, especially attractive for that last minute shopper out there.

And finally, last but absolutely not least, my favorite charities. If you’ve reached the point where you just don’t want any more stuff and you encourage family members to make donations in your name, then I hope you’ll consider one of these area charities this holiday season. Each does something so important and I think we all know donations to charity really is the gift that keeps on giving. Please consider:

Mission Sleepis an amazing local DC area non-profit – the goal of this group is to offer much needed assistance

Now this is a great shot of a working mom in action. Here is Mission Sleep Founder Denise Stern with Senator Tim Kaine and her totally disinterested girls. I love it!

to moms with newborns whose husbands are deployed overseas or who are wounded when the baby arrives. I think just how much help we all need when a baby is born is something even time can’t erase from our memories – and the daunting task of facing this adjustment alone while worrying about your husband overseas or helping him recover from injuries, is overwhelming. Mission Sleep aims to send nurses into the homes of new moms to provide them assistance through the night and much needed education. Mission Sleep works in partnership with Walter Reed Medical Center. I applaud this group and hope you’ll consider donating to them this holiday season.
It is a nonnarcotic drug, which can be used for the other kinds of https://spinegroup.ca/tramadol-online/ pain, after the operations, etc.

The DC Diaper Bank works to supply diapers to babies and toddlers in the DC area who are in need. These figures from their web site really impacted me: ” In DC, 44% of children under age three live in low-income families. In Maryland the number is 33%, and in Virginia 36% of three-year-olds share this reality. The cost of living in the DC metro area is the 8th highest in the country. The DC Diaper Bank provides an average of 20,000-23,000 diapers to more than 500 families a month. To date the DC Diaper Bank has donated over 203,000 diapers to families in need, and this number continues to grow.” I hope many of my readers will help those numbers grow not just this holiday season but throughout the year. For $12 a month, you can help diaper a baby for two entire weeks – and especially with newborns – you remember just how many diapers they go through in a day. This is so little money for such an important cause.

The Campagna Center, located in Alexandria, serves local families and children by providing services that allow kids to arrive to school ready to learn. In addition, they operate after school programs for elementary students. The Center also supports adult and family literacy through a program called New Neighbors.

If any of these charities are new to you, hopefully you are inspired to learn more about them and maybe select one to donate too. And moi, you ask, what do I want for Christmas? Why, for you to keep reading my blog, to “Like” my fabulous Wired Momma Facebook page and to share any posts you like with friends and family, of course!

Disclosure: Psychobaby sent me a monster shirt for my youngest but my opinions here are all my own.

Feed it Forward: Gifting without spending this holiday season

I’ve been working with Restaurant.com for the past few months as a blog ambassador and as much as I’ve enjoyed having an excuse to get out and try new restaurants, today’s program is, hands down, my favorite thing yet to share with you about Restaurant.com.

Starting today through December 25, or until the $40 million dollar goal has been met, Restaurant.com is launching its 4th annual Feed It Forward campaign. This campaign launched back in 2008 when the economy was rock bottom and there were so many struggling families and individuals. The idea behind the campaign is paying it forward without spending the extra money you might not have. So givers can give $10 Restaurant.com eGift cards, up to 40 PER DAY, during the holiday season.

You heard me.

You can send a gift to someone who you appreciate or you want to thank or who you think would really

appreciate a special meal — and you don’t have to spend any of your own money to do this. Givers can give their gift cards either through Facebook or email and then invite that person to then “Feed It Forward” by logging on to Restaurant.com and giving to others. It is such a simple concept and paying it forward is such a fulfilling accomplishment, I am just so impressed with Restaurant.com’s generosity and spirit.

To me, part of thanking others and paying it forward was especially challenging when I was younger because I had so little money for anything. I plan to share this campaign with my older nieces, not only to send them a gift of a special treat on me but to inspire them to pay it forward to others in their lives who they would like to thank but don’t have the resources of their own to do so.  Thanks to Restaurant.com, spreading cheer has never been quite so easy.

I hope you’ll take advantage of this generous program and spread the word!

Disclosure: I am compensated by Restaurant.com as part of the blog ambassador program but my opinions here are all my own.

Gaylord National’s ICE! Featuring Shrek & Friends

Where can you find two million pounds of colorful ice, snap a great picture featuring a photo bomb from Gingy the Gingerbread Man, roar down an ice slide, ride a train, see some snow fall, take your picture with Santa and go on a Scavenger Hunt – without having to load in and out of your car a million times?

Ready to head into the ice dome

Why, at the Gaylord National Resort – home to DC’s one-stop Christmas adventure for kids – seriously.

Last Sunday we headed off to the Gaylord hotel to experience Christmas on the Potomac and we ended up staying for about five hours. If our youngest wasn’t so tuckered out, we could have stayed longer. The list of activities to experience this season at the Gaylord is long and appeals to kids of all ages. First, there’s the most popular ICE! display, which is open now until January 6. Under a domed tent kept at an extremely frigid nine degrees you can experience a very Shrek Christmas. I marvel over how these artists from China can transform two million pounds of ice into a beautiful, creative, funny and magical Christmas displays starring Shrek, Fiona, and everyone’s favorite characters from the movie. The ice slide is our perennial favorite but after about a dozen trips down the five different slides, me and Mr. Wired Momma were ready to move on and I wondered if, even with the extra Gaylord blue parka over my own coat, I would ever defrost and warm up. At that point I was basically thinking about myself – my fingers were so cold – I wasn’t even worrying about the kids (true confession). That’s the catch about heading to the Gaylord, if you’re planning on doing ICE! and a few other activities, is it best to just pack a backpack for the layers because otherwise you’ll get so hot in the hotel but I’m not sure you can bring enough to keep warm inside the ice tent.

Frozen happy ice turkey, anyone? He could have made a great center-piece at my Thanksgiving dinner

We absolutely loved watching Shrek learn about the true meaning of Christmas as we ventured through the dome. Heading to this event is something that requires strategy and planning, beyond just bringing a backpack and lots of gloves, hats and scarves, however. First, it can get really crowded, and waiting in long lines with kids overdressed – is not necessarily something that puts you in the Christmas spirit. Frankly, it doesn’t take long for me to start looking and acting like an Ogre. We were there opening weekend and fortunately most people around the beltway weren’t yet thinking about Christmas, so we managed to bypass the inevitable lines. My best advice is purchase your tickets in advance so you can plan strategically for non-peak days. Tickets are also cheaper on non-peak days ($22.99 for adults ages 13+ on non-peak and $29.99 for adults on peak days. $15.99 for kids ages 4-12 on non peak and $22.99 for kids during peak days). Kids ages 0-3 are free. They also offer military discounts. Non-peak days are Mondays-Fridays and Peak days are Saturdays & Sundays.  Before moving on to the other list of activities at the Gaylord, I have to mention the pink ice dragon. At an astounding 40 feet long, she wraps around the last corridor you’ll go through in the ice dome and she’s really a dramatic and beautiful ending to the display. Being a true princess, my fingers were too cold for me to want to get out my camera and snap a picture of her before I left, but trust me – I wanted too. Clearly I need better gloves.

So where too next? Well, on our  multi-hour adventure, we participated in the Scavenger Hunt through the Atrium of the hotel. Participating in this scavenger hunt means you’re also purchasing tickets to the DreamWorks character meet & greet, which is located in the dome where the ICE! display is (though the heated part) and gives the kids a chance to take their pictures with Shrek, Po the Kung Fu Panda, Puss in Boots and Alex the lion from Madagascar. Again, this adventure requires some strategy and planning because the line can get pretty long but it’s worth it especially for the little ones who really get excited about life-size beloved characters. My older one absolutely LOVED the scavenger hunt which, admittedly, was pretty tricky and ultimately we didn’t end up finishing (much to her chagrin). Personally I suck at riddles but Mr. Wired Momma is pretty good at them – so he was especially helpful at cracking a few of the clues on the hunt. For this particular adventure, it is $35 per person ages four and up. Again, not cheap, but if your kids are really into these DreamWorks characters or you love the quality time involved in a long scavenger hunt, then this is absolutely worth it.

Then came Gingy’s Gingerbread Decorating, tucked nicely inside a lovely Gingerbread House. Gingy himself is hilarious and quite the entertaining dancer. He even coaxed my older one into a few pictures with him, despite her initial resistence because of her laser-like focus on decorating her train cookie. Gingy is also responsible for one of the more hilarious, part creepy photobombs I’ve ever captured. See for yourself:

While capturing the eldest Wired Momma’ette working hard on her cookie decorating, why look who suddenly appeared….Gingy. #Hilarious

Anyhow, decorating cookies with Gingy proved to be a welcome break during our busy afternoon. We all enjoyed just resting for a bit while the girls took their time decorating their cookie train, munching on the treats and generally enjoyed taking dozens of pictures with Gingy. If you go and plan a few activities, I’d recommend saving this one for break-time. Located in the lower Atrium of the hotel, decorating with Gingy is $29.95 for the gingerbread kit, frosting and candy.

After we decorated cookies, we finished a few more clues in the Scavenger Hunt and then realized the youngest Wired Momma’ette was on the fast train to tantrum-ville if we didn’t call it a day, so we headed back to the car. Our oldest one could have stayed for hours and definitely didn’t want to miss the indoor snowfall and the nightly tree lighting at 6:30pm. Families can also enjoy brunch with Santa in December, take Santa souvenir photos or enjoy a Shrek Feast, a fairy tale feast including Shrek shaped waffles, a magic fountain bubbling over with chocolate potions and take pictures with the characters.

To learn more about all these events, log onto Christmas On the Potomac. Overall, if you are on the hunt for several holiday activities and want to wrap them all up in one location, this is your best bet – but it’s definitely pricey and requires some strategic planning to avoid crowds and long lines. If possible, I’d encourage you to take advantage of non-peak days but I’m really glad we were able to experience it and already look forward to going again next year. Be sure to “Like” the Wired Momma Facebook page to keep up with more holiday happenings…and some inevitable sarcasm and Scrooge-like comments from moi.

Disclosure: The Gaylord Hotel invited me and my family to a media and blogging day to enjoy all the activities as their guests. My opinions here are all my own.
