What to do around the beltway with the kids

The Anti-Pumpkin Patch October Idea Guide

Call me a grump but pumpkin patches make me angry. The crowds, the obnoxious parents who don’t watch their kids and let them stay in a moonbounce for too long, the overtired screaming children, all in the name of the fall harvest and October fun. Now don’t get me wrong, I go to them, begrudgingly. And I take pictures and I dress my kids in Halloween themed shirts and try to pose them near pumpkins. I fall for it every year and leave grumpy, hot, and tired. So what I am going to do in the next few weeks is bring you ideas on what to do that are not pumpkin patches (ahem Butlers Orchard, the biggest thorn in my side). First up – for any Pinkalicious or Dinosaur fans in your house, here are two great upcoming events:

Pinkalicious and the Pink Pumpkin at Room & Board! From the press release about the event:

Can't wait to buy this book for my girls!

Join Pinkalicious author Victoria Kann (www.thinkpinkalicious.com) for a book signing and party for her fall book in the series, Pinkalicious and the Pink Pumpkin.  The event will stage at Room & Board’s 1840 14th Street NW showroom on Saturday, October 15 from 11am – 1pm.  Parents and their children will enjoy a intimate reading followed by a book signing, with fun activities and snacks for the kids.

OK – so I was pretty much hooked when I heard the event is about Pinkalicious but am swooning over her search for a pink pumpkin in a patch – that is the kind of pumpkin patch I’d like to head off too. Room & Board will also be giving away a Jill table and four little Jack chairs from their collection of children’s furniture – another great reason to attend this fabulous non-pumpkin patch event. The book signing begins at noon and this event is free!

For the dinosaur lovers out there, October 12 is National Fossil Day and everyone is invited to see Jim Henson’s new Dinosaur Puppets forPBS’ fabulous cartoon, Dinosaur Train,  from 10-2 across from Smithsonian’s Natural History Museum. Here’s the info I received:

You are never too young to be a paleontologist! Jim Henson’s popular preschool science show, Dinosaur Train, will celebrate National Fossil Day at the National Mall on Oct. 12. Dinosaur Train will feature a booth where children can catch a sneak peek of the new Nature Trackers episodes launching in November, and take photos with the show’s curious, funny and intelligent Tyrannosaurus Rex, Buddy.

Visitors to the booth will enjoy free giveaways and participate in a variety of paleontology-related activities, including a “Dinosaur with Feathers” educational session where children can adorn their arts and crafts with real feathers, and create their very own Buddy mask. The premiere of Dinosaur Train’s new Nature Trackers episode can be viewed exclusively at the Henson booth. Kids can even sign up for the new Nature Trackers Club, where they can join Buddy, Shiny, Tiny and Don online to make new scientific discoveries while understanding and appreciating their natural surroundings.

Hosted by the National Park Service and the American Geological Association, this special day dedicated to fossils is a part of Earth Science Week, an event that encourages people everywhere to explore the natural world and learn about the geosciences.

This year’s Dinosaur Train booth will include:

·         Dinosaur Train’s Buddy, the T-Rex, taking photos and interacting with children
·         An exclusive sneak peek of Dinosaur Train’s new Nature Trackers episodes premiering in November
·         Memberships to the new Nature Trackers Club
·         Educational session “Dinosaurs with Feathers”
·         Arts and crafts and a do-it-yourself Buddy mask.
·         Free giveaways

Tales of Beatrix Potter at the Puppet Co.

By now you probably know that if there is a show at Glen Echo Park, at the Puppet Co. or Adventure Theatre, then I am going to go check it out with my girls. I am certain that Glen Echo Park is a real gem of Maryland and every production at its theatres is bound to be fun-filled for our kids. Last weekend, we hit the Puppet Co. for Applause Unlimited’s Tales of Beatrix Potter. Billed as appropriate for Pre-K through Grade 4, we hedged our bets and also brought our almost 3-year-old. The 45 minute show was filled with adorable puppets and enough physical comedy to keep the kids amused and entertained the whole time. We loved it!

Showing until October 9, The Tales of Beatrix Potter is a one-man show with a multitude of adorable animal puppets.

The opening tale, “Two Bad Mice,”  includes two rascally mice who wreak havoc on a young girl, Lucinda’s, playroom and doll house. My three-year-old was especially delighted with their antics and energy though all the children were enthralled with what trouble the playroom mice would find next. The second tale, “Jeremy  Fisher,”  introduces us to Jeremy Fisher the frog, dressed in bright red rain boots and rain coat, who takes us on his adventures fishing in the rain. And finally, we meet Jemima the duck who wants to lay her eggs in a safe warm place and, you might remember, chooses a fox’s den. The youngest children in the audience were beginning to fade off by the third tale, hence the Puppet Co’s labeling of this as age-appropriate for those closer to four, but we still were glad we brought our youngest. The younger ones might not absorb the final lesson of trust but they still delighted in the creative performance and story-telling.

Initially I was thinking this play might appeal mainly to young girls but in reality, that wasn’t the case at all. The colorful cast of animal puppets and the heavy reliance on physical comedy throughout the show makes this a great outing for boys and girls. Christopher Hudert is the sole puppeteer and actor in the play and his extensive experience in children’s theater, including many years as the Boss Clown for the Ringling Bros., is evident through his range of voices, pitch and easy ability to transition into different characters through the three tales.

The Tales of Beatrix Potter is runs on Thursdays through Sundays and you have until October 9 to catch it, so I encourage parents with younger children to book their tickets today! Tickets are $10  and can be purchased online or by calling (301) 634-5380.  The beloved carousel is still open at Glen Echo, in September it is open on Saturdays and Sundays from noon-6pm. Up next at the Puppet Co. is The 3 Billy Goats Gruff from October 13 – November 18.

Disclosure: the Puppet Co. gifted the tickets to me for this performance but my opinions here are my own.

I haven’t seen this show yet (count on a review on October 20 from me) but I saw the Disney Ice show last February and I was just as enthralled as my daughter. We ended up going twice. Disney never disappoints and I felt it was definitely worth the price of admission last winter.  Here’s a blurb from the Disney show producers about the show, times and ticket prices:

“Experience Disney’s hilarious hair-raising escapade, Tangled, as Rapunzel and her unlikely companions, Flynn and Maximus, embark on an uproarious journey that takes adventure to new lengths!  Boogie to the beat of the bayou with Princess Tiana and Prince Naveen from The Princess and the Frog in a magical, musical journey that all begins with a fateful kiss.  And join in a fanciful dream-come-true when Cinderella meets her Prince Charming, with a glass slipper fit for an unforgettable fantasy.
All your favorite princesses take to the ice in a spectacular finale at the ultimate Disney Princess event of a lifetime! Experience the beauty, sparkle, and spirit when Disney On Ice presents Dare to Dream comes to Northern Virginia and the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area!”
