What to do around the beltway with the kids

Disney on Ice Discount Code & Other Fab Kids Events

Can't wait to see the new Disney on Ice Show!

As a special New Years treat to my dear readers, I have a discount code for next month’s Disney on Ice 100 Years of Magic show at the Verizon Center. Plug in BLOG12 into Ticketmaster when you are purchasing your tickets and you’ll receive 20% off the ticket price. This makes the least expensive tickets $15. We always love the show – we went last February and my then 2-year-old was mesmerized. We also went in October and loved it. This February we are particularly excited about the Lion King! Be sure to “Like” the Wired Momma FB page for more updates on this show, including a chance to win tickets!

Also wanted to be sure you all knew that the newest production at Adventure Theatre in Glen Echo opens on January 20 – The Snowy Day – a musical. I cannot wait. It’s for kids ages Pre-K and up. I’m sure tickets will go fast. I’ll diabetes post a review after we go see it when it opens. Meanwhile over at the fabulous Puppet Co, neighbors to Adventure Theatre, Peter & The Wolf opens January 13. Two wonderful chances to keep the kids busy during the doldrum days of January!!

Finally,  January is Home Organization month – which probably surprises no one. And I’ve seriously caught the home organization bug…which I do every January…and it all bottoms out and fails on me by the spring. Anyhoo…local stylist and home organization expert, Rachel Strisik, is hosting some free seminars this month on organizing kids stuff and managing paper. The free kids seminar is next Wednesday at the Cleveland Park Library from 10:30-11:30. The paper seminar is Sunday January 22 from 10:30-11:30 at the Potomac Community Center in Potomac, MD. Look for my interview with the fabulous Rachel next week!

Happy weekend…and if you are really looking for some indoor fun….the Chillum Splash Pool is one of my all-time fav indoor kids burn-that-energy places around the Beltway.

Holiday Happenings…

Sick toddlers colliding with pre-Christmas prep and deadlines is really  just a cruel reality, isn’t it? So bear with me this week. Today I offer you a list of some really fun holiday events that are happening either this week during the week or within the next two weeks – these events appeal to anyone who loves baseball and ballet, live beautiful music & trains or is celebrating Hanukkah.

It's a little grainy but clearly the Presidents are graceful...

For Ballet and Baseball Lovers on Wednesday Dec 14:

For the second year, Tom, George, Abe and Teddy – the Nationals’ Racing Presidents – will be making a special appearance in the Washington Ballet’s performance of The Nutcracker. On Wednesday, December 14 the Mount Rushmore Four will take the stage at the Warner Theater in Artistic Director Septime Webre’s unique interpretation of the holiday classic.

For your reference, here is a link to video of the Presidents’ performance from last year:

Capital Accord Chorus: Women’s Barbershop Style A Cappella Group at U.S. Botanical Gardens & The Willard:

Really, the combination of the amazing holiday display and trains at the U.S. Botanical Gardens along with beautiful music is something that is hard for anyone to want to miss. Even better, a neighborhood friend of mine is one of the performers in the Capital Accord Chorus! So this week, you have not one but TWO chances to soak in some beautiful live music along with treating the kids to the dazzling displays at the Botanical Gardens or if you miss that, enjoy the warmth and lovely holiday decorations at the Willard along with some holiday cheer:

 Tuesday, Dec. 13, 6:00-8:00 p.m.

U.S. Botanic Garden (100 Maryland Ave. SW, on the National Mall near the Capitol building)
The Botanic Garden has beautiful holiday displays of plants and miniature trains, and we’ll be singing for a few hours (repeating a set) so there’s plenty of time to explore the greenhouses and to hear the singing too.

Thursday, Dec. 15, 5:00-5:45 p.m

Willard Hotel lobby (1401 Pennsylvania Ave., NW, D.C.)
Rumor has it that not only can the chorus’ beautiful music be heard in the lobby, it will also be piped out to the sidewalk in front of the Willard.

Santa, Sleighs, Reindeer, Frosty…DC Holiday Activities with the Kids

Festivus for the rest of us...

Honestly, I find it overwhelming to parse through all the activities to do with the kids this time of year. And true, you know I had that tortured love-hate relationship with pumpkin patches – so you better believe the same can be said for my feelings towards Christmas sanctioned events. The crowds, the lines, the tears in line waiting to see Santa – it can all be too much for even the most Christmas-obsessed among us (which on some days, I might be, minus the Christmas sweater). So, if you are feeling overwhelmed, then I suggest you turn to the amazing resources and work of some of my favorite area bloggers who do everyone else’s homework for them.

Probably best to leave this particular one at home

For the  can’t- miss anything – comprehensive list of what is happening around the beltway, don’t miss this amazing list compiled by Our-Kids. For keeping up-to-date on what’s happening in Northern Virginia specifically, then head on over to the lovely SuperNOVAMommy – I particularly like her list of ideas for indoor activities as these cold days creep up on us and stick around. And for what’s happening in Montgomery County, check out A Parent in Silver Spring’s fabulous ideas.

And then remember the pumpkin patch fight club rules – they apply across all holidays and major event activities- the pitfalls of all parents when we are eager to celebrate the joy of a new season or holiday event:

Fantasy vs. Reality:  you will get there and realize it was a good idea on paper

Staging the Photo-Op vs. Losing Your Mind: the children won’t cooperate and look at the camera at the same time or smile at the same time, so just pack your patience

Hungry Like A Wolf: Do you starve your child?  Inevitably they will need snacks and act like you haven’t fed them in weeks, so pack accordingly.

And with that, enjoy these amazing lists and ideas compiled by the lovely area bloggers! Happy Festivus!

Disney Princesses on Ice: Dare to Dream Review

Can you see her sparkly skates? Swoon....

Last night, I was lucky enough to take my girls and my mom to see Disney Princesses on Ice at the Patriot Center. Unfortunately for them, I wasn’t clever enough to write down the start-time correctly. The first clue should have been when they lifted the cones blocking access to the prime parking spots directly across the street from the Patriot Center…affording us the chance to secure a spot with ease on a rainy night. Our second clue should have been the non-existent line at Will Call.

But it wasn’t until we sat down for the Cinderella portion of the show and suddenly they were wrapping up for intermission 20 minutes later that we realized the show didn’t start at 7:30. It actually started at 7pm.

First lesson: Don’t trust me and double-check the show start-time.

Second lesson: If parking for anything related to Disney is easy and works out with no drama, there’s a reason.

Third lesson: When missing part of a Disney Princess show, just don’t tell your kids that they missed the first act. And don’t feel guilty about it.

Though the truth is, we missed what was surely a fabulous ensemble telling the story of the Princess and the Frog, complete with amazing music. I am super disappointed about that. But I still am not ever revealing it to my girls. And if you tell them, I’ll call you a liar…

So, my review is only for the final two acts and then the finale…because I am an idiot.

Cinderella is a resident favorite for my oldest, so she was delighted to walk into the Arena to find the Mice on stage helping Cinderella. I was mystified as to how anyone can ice skate, let alone so well, wearing an enormous mouse costume. The Fairy Godmother never disappoints and she very theatrically transformed the pumpkin into a glowing carriage ride fit only for a true princess. My mom marveled over Cinderella’s shiny, sparkly ice skates and confessed her life-long desire to ice skate in just one of these shows.

We were enjoying it more than our girls?

No. They were transfixed, including my completely exhausted because she refused to nap because she was so excited – almost 3-year-old. But our sheer pleasure in watching the stories of the Princesses unfold was pretty close to my girls. I ain’t gonna lie.

After intermission, which was notably quick and we avoided all the over-priced Disney swag hanging around the Patriot Center by setting the ground rules before we even left for the show: NO ONE IS GETTING ANYTHING….YOUR TREAT IS GOING TO THE SHOW. Which I then repeated mercilessly until I could feel them rolling their eyes at me. On this one, I stand firm that they learn that going to a live show is the treat, not the over-priced Disney merchandise being hawked just beyond our seats.

Rapunzel and Flynn

The second half of the show started off with the newest Princess, Rapunzel from Tangled. I was really anxious to see how they would handle her long, silken hair while spinning around ice, and it was shown very creatively with wheat colored sashes that moved from the ceiling down towards the ice. At one point, Rapunzel and Flynn Rider were hoisted up on Rapunzel’s wheat sashes, like a hybrid ice-skating/Cirque de Soleil move, spinning around in the air. We LOVED it. Even my mom, who wasn’t familiar with the new Tangled story line, was delighted and surprised with the scene. My hands-down favorite act was the bar scene when the shady Viking characters sing the “I have a dream” song. The costumes, dancing and music were exciting, hilarious and dynamic.  Next up in my line of favorites was the Tangled horse, Maximus, whose costume is strikingly similar to the way he looks in the movie, and I was consumed with how many people were in that costume and how they coordinated ice skating, let alone dancing. Meanwhile my girls were just enraptured.

As my youngest was starting to drift off, suddenly Mickey Mouse and Minnie appeared on the Ice and every princess dramatically arrived along with her prince for the grand finale. Of course, my youngest was then wondering where Goofy was, probably because she couldn’t possibly think of anyone else who was missing, but the dramatic fireworks to signal the ending made her quickly forget the absence of Goofy.

The show was just under 2 hours, with the brief intermission, and kept my over-tired and exhausted children enthralled and immobilized in their seats for the entire time. I would definitely recommend seeing it at the Patriot Center this weekend or in Baltimore next weekend.

Disclosure: Feld Entertainment gifted the tickets to me but my opinions here are my own.
