Double Standards Apply Here

New Year, New Decade, same story. The media loves a good double standard story. And frankly, so do I. So let’s review some double standards that eeked into our gossip at the end of 2009 and some that are starting this new decade off on the right tone. Cause let’s be honest, I am all for a good double standard.

First one that comes to mind is the Elin-Tiger Woods – spousal abuse one. Imagine how we all are DYING to know that she totally went after him with a golf club and smashed the shit out of his car. It’ll just make us all love her more. He totally deserves it and we understand her rage. But we’re supposed to then talk about how Tiger couldn’t go after Elin like this and he’d land in jail and we’d all be burning sticks outside his jail cell chanting for his death. And well, it seems fair to me. I am ok with that particular double standard and I hope she really scared the shit out of him that night in her rage.

But let’s use this same couple for another double standard example. I know I am not alone in wondering why Tiger got married. Oh right, he got married because it was a crucial part of his brilliantly crafted image as the perfect man. And the perfect man has a hot blond swedish wife, of course. And adorable kids. But see, he’s a man. So he could have also made a billion off being a playboy, like Derek Jeter. We all expect male athletes to be players, we know women are throwing themselves at them, they have millions, so I just look at really any male athlete and assume he has a bunch of STDs. But this doesn’t impact his endorsements or his professional success. But name me one female athlete or actress who could get away with such antics? We accept men whores. We do not accept whores. Double standard. Like it or not.

And the latest double standard today is the gossip of former fit Scottish celeb Gerard Butler surfacing as chub-tastic on his warm vacation versus how he looked while shooting the 300 movie. And does anyone care? Yet even the President made a comment about the buzz surrounding Jessica Simpson’s “weight gain” last year. I, for one, will admit that I am disturbed when I see chubby Luke Wilson in those cell phone commercials – I do wonder why he let himself go – but again – he’s working. Would a fat female celeb get hired as a spokesperson? I think they only do when it’s related to weight loss, think Queen Lateefah, Marie Osmond (is she a celeb), the chick from Cheers (too lazy to remember her name).

So there you have it, new year, new decade, same double standards.

Hoppin’ on the Tiger Train

A true first happened in my house this morning. And no, I’m not talking about my 4-year-old waking up at 3:45am when she realized the power was out and it was dark and remained up for the day, I’m talking about something else entirely.

Nestled into the couch with my warm cup of coffee, I opened the paper and didn’t go straight for the Style section. I didn’t even go for the A section. Nope. Today – I went for the SPORTS section. Like I said, stranger things have probably never happened chez moi.

Doesn’t take a genius to figure out why – like most other women in America, I am completely obsessed with the Tiger story. Following that obsession, I am obsessed with the slime who are the WH party crashers. Anyhoo – until a few days ago, I couldn’t have cared less about baby face Tiger. I don’t care about or even like golf. I really couldn’t care less about professional sports. And whatever products he promotes, I either don’t care about or don’t buy because he said I should.

But now, I am all aboard the Tiger trashing train.

Being a PR person by profession, I am fascinated with how poorly he managed the initial news break and allowed the rumors to fester for days. I’m sure he’s any crisis communications manager’s worst nightmare because I guarantee he wasn’t listening to their counsel for days…his ego too big for their advice.

Being a wife, I am fascinated because well, it’s any wife’s nightmare.

Being a mom, I am fascinated because if he truly did carry on an affair with one of these women for over 30 months, it seems he was cheating through two pregnancies and deliveries. Nightmare.  Not to mention the message he’s just sent his children for them to digest as they get older.

Being a woman, I can’t help but think about these other women that cheated. Why do they disrespect another woman (Tiger’s gorgeous wife) so much, and why are they so self-centered – that they would participate in an affair with a married man. No, scratch that. A married FATHER. Why do women do this to each other?

Being not just a stylish and pretty woman, but also a smart one, I also can’t help but feel disgust towards Tiger – cocktail waitresses. Come the f on Tiger. You couldn’t have cheated at least with someone intelligent and equally as successful – you had to just make it about them being easy and gross and dumb?  Takin a page out of the Bill Clinton playbook, apparently.

So clearly there are lots of reasons why I am obsessed – but let’s get to the heart of the real reason – I look at his unbelievably beautiful wife, who is also incredibly sexy, and has given him two gorgeous children – and I think to myself – jesus – if she can’t be enough for him – what the hell kind of chance do me and my two children later muffin top – have?

Now let’s be real. I’m not an insecure person. And I’m definitely not insecure in my marriage. But still – this kind of story surely secretly rattles all of us.

If Tiger were a politician, we’d expect him to stand behind a podium during a press conference and confess his sins and beg for forgiveness. Though Tiger has a higher profile than most of the cheating scum bag politicians who have stood up there, he is allowed to escape this ordeal – so we don’t have to sit around and wonder if his wife will or will not stand up there next to him. Instead, we are left wondering what she’ll do next. The angry side of us just hopes she kicks him to the curb and takes him for all his billions.

That same angry side of us also secretly hopes she was chasing him with a golf club that night and smashed in a window. Is that a double standard? Oh definitely. He’s not allowed to do that to her, cheating or not, but still – you read moi because I just say the truth. And I never said I was above a good solid double standard.

So these are all the reasons I opened up the sports section today and just might do it again tomorrow. Why are you obsessed?

Paula & Hillary

Let’s take a minute to talk about two women in the news for two different and important reasons.

First – Paula Abdul. By now we all know that Paula quit her job with American Idol and it’s apparently over a dispute regarding her salary. If you believe the reports, she was earning $2 million a year to Ryan Seacrest’s $15 million or Simon Cowell’s $38 million. Setting aside how absurd these annual salaries are, can you blame her? Sure, we can understand why Simon Cowell makes more, he is the creator of the show. But why is someone like Ryan Seacrest making so much more than Paula?

This strikes me as another example of women being grossly underpaid against men and this woman is taking a stand. Now, perhaps she was hoping the producers of the show would counter-offer with a more similarly priced salary as say Ryan, and it doesn’t seem that is happening – but still – I think what Paula is doing is important and hopefully inspiring other women to ask for more.

Now, let’s not forget that I am moderately annoyed and beyond surprised that I am blogging about Paula Abdul as a female role-model, but then again, some of my favorite things come from the grocery store, so who am I anymore?

Moving on.

Hillary.

I’m sure you’ve all seen her outburst yesterday in Congo over someone in the audience asking her for her husband’s opinion. Sure, everyone says now that student meant to ask what President Obama thinks. Sure Hillary totally pounced on the dude. But now she is being vilified in the press. It’s like this woman can’t get a break – and I generally don’t even really care for her. Would the media pay an ounce of attention to the press if a man responded this way if he thought someone was asking what his high profile wife thought? I don’t think so. He would seem confident and in command for reprimanding someone and putting them back in their place.

Yet Hillary seems emotional and “tired” from her trip. Some pundits are making excuses for her.

Come on. She reacted. She is human. She is the secretary of state and ought to react if someone is seemingly putting her down. I mean, didn’t the Koreans call her a “funny woman” and a “school girl” just like two weeks ago.  The press coverage of her is incredibly chauvinistic and it’s a shame her reaction is over-shadowing her presence in Congo, a country where over 200,000 women and children have been raped in a few months, the most dangerous place on earth for women. That is the real story here people.

Open Letter to the Networks

If I had gobs of money like that strange Texas oilman who is always running energy ads, I would take out an open letter ad in the major papers and run ads on TV – mocking the networks for their “journalism” and pleading with them to stop.

Stop the madness.

Stop the absurd round-the-clock coverage.

MJ is dead. He was not super human. He did not walk on water. He didn’t solve the Middle East crisis or cure cancer.  He hasn’t even really done anything remarkable or noteworthy beyond allegedly being a pedophile in what – like 15 years.

Let it go, people. He was a man. He impacted popular culture, he was a leader in making super cool music videos back in the day, he had some great songs. Then he got weird. And guess sleeping aids what, it’s sad that he died and all – but seriously – seriously. Stop. Stop with the incessant coverage. Stop with the obsession over what will happen to his children. What about all the children who are left without a father every day – and guess what – they aren’t inheriting millions and might not even have big families to take them in? Let’s give them some attention instead of the children of a pop icon.

And how about all the news that is actually news-worthy out there that we aren’t getting because of the obsession with MJ. I keep wondering – is anyone beyond the network news and their web sites – as interested in the story? Is there a story? He died. Let’s move on.
